I just received my new external hard-drive from Dell, and I just partitioned it so that I could put an emergency backup operating system on it to retrieve files from my computer that I haven’t backed up yet.
Can an external hard-drive boot operating systems such as Linux, Solaris, or LynxOS RTOS?
Just curious…
By the way, where can I get a copy of the OpenDarwin OS?

Linux: The Choice Of A Gnu Generation We’ll use the more than apt description of Linux from ESR’s Jargon File: Linux /lee’nuhks/ or /li’nuks/, not /li:’nuhks/ n. The free Unix workalike created by Linus Torvalds and friends starting about 1991. The pronunciation /li’nuhks/ is preferred because the name Linus’ has an /ee/ sound in Swedish (Linus’s family is part of Finland’s 6% ethnic-Swedish minority) and Linus considers English short /i/ to be closer to /ee/ tha… More >>

On Dec 28th 2009 Linus celebrated his 40th birthday. Congratulations. This video is my birthday present. Way back in the 80s Linus Torvalds made his first conceptional and system programming experiences on the Sinclair QL with its preemptive multitasking operating system QDOS. In 1986 Linus wrote a software blitter “GMOVE” as an extension to the superbasic language of the QL. It was published as a printed listing in the Finnish computer magazine BITTI in November 1986. This vid shows how GMOVE performs on an unmodified standard QL system (68008 CPU @7.5Mhz, 128KB RAM). Linus explored the QL deeply before he decided to buy a 80386 CPU based PC. Read a newsgroup message thread on the QL dated 1992 with contributions of Linus: groups.google.com More Info on GMOVE and download of it can be found here: www.qlvsjaguar.homepage.bluewin.ch

This is Linux for those of us who don’t mind typing. All Linux users and administrators tend to like the flexibility and speed of Linux administration from the command line in byte–sized chunks, instead of fairly standard GUIs. Beginning the Linux Command Line follows a task–oriented approach and is distribution agnostic. Work with files and directories. Administer users and security. Understand how Linux is organized.
