I am looking to set up a system that continuously provides background and data to a portale or dashboard.Something that allows a continuous flow of intelligence on either companiesor competitive products. What systems have people implemented using open source or free tools out there.

If it matters, I’m checking out the ArgoUML modeling tool. I’d like one or more concise books. I have a graduate degree in CS but in a field that thinks these techniques are for wimps.

Should I get Microsoft Visual C++ along with DirectX or is there a better or different set of programs for programming?

I am a web designer, and recently I’ve been faced with a need for databases. I was able to get by with an MS Access database, but in the future I’d like to be more professional. I’ve heard about Oracle, MySQL, and SQL databases. What are the differences between them?
